Data usage confusion....

In the last 1 1/2 -2 months we have been suddenly getting texts about either close to or going over data usage....This has never happened in over at least 4 or 5 years. We have tried several times to talk to AT&T both through phone and in store to clarify what and why this is suddenly happening. The bottom line question I have is.....If we are connected to wifi are we using ANY data to use Internet, YouTube, Instagram, Netflix, music downloads or any videos or streaming videos whether it is on Facebook, via text message or other source? We cannot pinpoint what EXACTLY is supposedly using so much data and why. All of a sudden this has started happening. The only thing we do know is that if we download songs/music it uses data to download but once it's downloaded listening to it no longer uses data. Can you PLEASE PLEASE try and explain if we are ONLY on wifi what does or does NOT use data. We have been told several different things and it's so confusing and we keep getting charged the $15.00 for every 1g over and this needs to be resolved. Have been instructed on how to look and see who is using the different amounts of data but haven't been able to get a clear answer on the question *If on wifi what exactly uses data or should we be safe for no data usage as long as we are connected to wifi???? Sorry so long it's just been frustrating and can't seem to resolve in store or over phone (getting different answers each time) Thank you for ANY help or answers!!!!
