Even if that is the case, I don't believe that explains getting the exclamation mark. If your daughter is sending via MMS, her phone should automatically compress the picture to meet the limits. The reason for you getting the exclamation point is probably something else.
Do you haven an iphone too? If so, is your daughter sending via MMS or iMessage? If it is MMS, do you have cellular data turned on and do you have a good cellular data connection?
