I had the same experience myself.  After I had reordered the iphone 6 I looked on my account online and noticed that my data plan was supposed to expire in November.  I called and and was told that "the data plan i currently have is not compatible with the iphone 6".  after expressing my total disagreement with that comment I was told that all i needed to do was to call them when I received the phone and they can put it back like it was.  Not sure they were telling me this just to shut me up but we'll see.

Here is the REAL reason they want you to change data plans;

The new ios 8 takes up an enormous amount of data when the phone isn't being used if you don't disable all of the background running apps (I found this out when I updated my 4S to ios 8 and realized the battery was being depleted faster than normal).  Carriers stand to make WAY more money on data plans than on actual talk.

I know this is old, but here is the technicality.  The Unlimited plan for Iphones with LTE *IS* different from the older HSPA smart phone unlimited plans.  You need to go off the old plan, but there is an unlimited plan for your new plan.  Don't let them say there isn't.  It gave me a heart attack when ordering my phone, but I recovered when I saw the new unlimited plan on there.
