Shoot I told the retention rep that I heard about the 10-20 double-down deal and simply asked him straight up if I could get it too--nothing more; I didn't tell any lies about threatening to cancel, mention anything about how the competition is offering better deals, or give some sob story about my bill being too high and if ATT may be able to do something to lessen the financial burden a bit.
No deception at all on my part, whether anyone else (here) chooses to believe it or not.
