Questions on details of Passport Plus plan for travel

Heading to Germany for a couple of weeks, and considering the Passport Plus plan, but need more detail that the ATT site provides:

We have an ulimited text plan at home, so assume that there would be no charge for any texts while traveling, either sending or receiving, correct?  Photos as well and simple text?

Another feature of the plan is the "free wi-fi," at hotspots.  Any real advantage here over the free wi-fi available to anyone at any number of hotspots scattered around the cities?  Spending a few days in Nürnberg, and a few days in and around Berlin, and wonder if the local cell providers have a wider wi-fi network that ATT is making available?

We are good with the 50 cents per call, outgoing and incoming, but question what happens if someone calls and it goes to voicemail.  Was told by a rep in one of the ATT stores that voicemail will not use any minutes as it goes to the data component of the Passport plan.  I'm thinking that we will be charged for an incoming call when the voicemail is left, but maybe when we listen to it later, that will use some of the data part of the plan .  If rep is correct, we could ignore calls we did not want to take, and not incur a charge.  Sounds too good to be true, but maybe I don't understand how the voicemail works, even here at home.

Data portion of the plan is fairly limited, but we are putting a local data SIMM in the iPad so won't need much on the phone.

Help with the questions would be appreciated, as well as suggestions and warnings about any plan shortcomings and potential "gotcha's."    Thanks!
