The passport plan only covers normal SMS and MMS messaging. iMessage is an Apple messaging system and all messages sent or received as an iMessage uses data. Your iPhone message app is capable of sending/receiving both iMessages and SMS/MMS messages. You can of course turn iMessage off and force your phone to send and receive everything as a normal text.
