Low and behold after 7 months AT & T tells me they are going to arbitrarily add data to my service and add $30.00 to my bill and there is nothing they can do about it. This was misrepresented to me by the Costco AT & T rep and is not acceptable. I told them they could give me a credit of $30.00 a month since I do not use data and since the system cannot reverse what has happened, according to Nicol the Rep at AT & T . If I cannot have a smart phone without data through AT & T then I should not have been able to use the phone with out the data plan which of course I have for the last 7 months.
I have been a customer of AT & T for some 25 years through various mergers etc and have generally been treated o k.
It appears AT & T has gotten too big for their britches so to speak and I will look elsewhere for service..
All the major carriers require a data plan with a smartphone, sorry the person at Costco did not know what they where talking about. The only was you can have a smartphone with out a required dataplan is with a gophone plan.
If you read the terms of service when you signed the contract it states that if you have a smartphone a data plan is required, if one is not added by you they will add one for you
